UAL Extended Diploma in Photography student Matthew Boal receives Tim Leah-Adams Award 2025!

UAL Extended Diploma in Photography student Matthew Boal is the recipient of this years Tim Leah-Adams Award, the photography awards are presented is in memory of two much-loved colleagues, whose impact continues to be felt throughout our community, the award celebrates the outstanding qualities they held dear. The Tim Leah-Adams Award recognises technical excellence in photography, while the Jan Secker Award honours resilience in overcoming personal challenges.

Matthew was presented with the award because he has “demonstrated outstanding technical growth and commitment from day one. A mature, respectful student, he has embraced every aspect of the course with determination and professionalism. His journey with analogue photography exemplifies this growth—once dismissive, he now embraces the medium with enthusiasm and skill, reflecting both personal and creative development.”

“Within college, Matthew has supported the wider community by photographing students from acting and fashion, contributing positively to cross-course collaboration. Beyond college, his professional practice continues to flourish, with a growing client base including the Men’s England Hockey Team, Spennymoor Town FC, and various local businesses and events. He has also sought out studio experience, working at Niltoni Studios in Newcastle to further develop his expertise. Matthew’s technical ability, drive, and professionalism make him a worthy recipient of this award. He leaves college to continue his studies at university”

Matthew joined the college from Teesside high school, he said “I chose to study and the Northern school of art because it is the only specialist place at college level that I could study only photography. I loved my course over the 2 years; my lecturers have been amazing.”

Speaking of his award he said “I was so surprised when I found out about the award and even more so when I knew I won, it was a perfect way to finish the 2 years at the college.”
