The BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design Student of the Year 2023 award recognises the overall performance, approach to studying and achievement of graduating students from the BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design Programme.
The winner of this award is Robin Mclaughlin who “has fully engaged with all aspects of their studies from day one and will graduate with a collection of work that is thought provoking, contemporary and personal. This student has drawn upon extensive primary research from both a historical and contemporary perspective to take risks in developing a beautiful fashion print collection that is sophisticated and innovative.
Throughout their studies this student has consistently worked with commitment and passion for their subject and has embraced opportunities offered throughout their studies. This student has fully extended their skills across all areas of surface design, but especially in printed textiles and the team wish him every success with his future plans.”

Why did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art?
I chose to study at The Northern School of Art because it is a welcoming institution, all the staff are friendly. The course offered me everything and more I was looking for in textiles as well as, amazing equipment and workshop spaces.
Whats your favourite memory from your time at the school?
There are a lot of memories from the last three years both academically and socially that are special. One of my favourite memories is surpassing my personal expectations of my dissertation. It was a stressful thing to do but I enjoyed writing and researching into my topic. I think socially it is all the times spent together as a class group in the studios getting to know everyone.
What are your next steps?
Next, I am hoping to continue my studies with The Northern School of Art on the masters focusing on design practice. My future is unknown, but I hope to eventually work in a design studio for fashion focusing on print design. My dream would be to work for designers like Versace or Alexander McQueen as they inspire my creative practice.
What would your advice be to future students?
My advice would be definitely apply. Go in with an open mind on what you think textiles is and be open to learning as much as possible, you never know you might surprise yourself. I know I did.
