Our story,
over 150 years in the making.
CREATIVITY STARTS IN MIDDLESBROUGH
The Northern College of Art has been part of Middlesbrough’s creative landscape since 1870, when the original Middlesbrough School of Art opened its doors. Founded during a period of industrial growth across the North East, the school was created to support a new generation of artists, designers and makers, people with the practical skills and creative thinking needed to shape the industries of the future.
More than 150 years later, that same creative spirit still defines who we are.
Today, our Middlesbrough campus is home to Further Education, offering A Levels, Diplomas and specialist creative courses in a modern town centre building designed for contemporary creative learning. While the studios, technology and industries around us have changed over time, our approach remains rooted in experimentation, making and developing individual creative voices.
The College is part of one connected creative institution alongside The Northern School of Art in Hartlepool. Together, the two campuses create clear progression routes from Further Education into Higher Education, allowing students to continue their creative journey within the same supportive artistic community.
From first sketchbooks to final portfolios, The Northern College of Art is a place to explore ideas, take creative risks and build the confidence to shape what comes next.
FROM GREEN LANE TO THE HEART OF MIDDLESBROUGH
Creative education in Middlesbrough has evolved across generations of buildings, campuses and creative spaces. From the original Middlesbrough School of Art in the nineteenth century to the specialist facilities students use today, each move has reflected the changing needs of creative education and the industries around it.
For many years, the College was associated with Green Lane and later the Newport Road campus, both remembered by generations of students who developed their creative practice there. These spaces became an important part of Middlesbrough’s artistic identity, supporting everything from traditional art and design education to the growth of new creative disciplines and technologies.
Today, that history continues in our modern town centre campus. Designed for contemporary creative learning, the building brings together open studios, specialist teaching spaces and industry-standard facilities within the centre of Middlesbrough’s growing cultural and educational quarter. While the surroundings have changed over time, the focus on creativity, experimentation and practical learning has remained constant throughout every chapter of the College’s history.
