From 4th -7th October, Middlesbrough becomes a creative hub, with a full programme of local, regional and international artists.
Developing on the success of the first year and the theme of the dispersed gallery, year two takes on the idea of connectivity. The festival is an attempt to ask ‘what connects a community?’ Through the practices and public programming the weekend aims to highlight understanding the differences between: Communities of data / Communities of things / Communities of individuals.
The aim is to develop on current trends in community art practices and build a networked show of performance, sound, installation and events.
MAW18 is an opportunity to explore practices across the contemporary art spectrum, starting with a selection of performances at our Thursday evening Opening and culminating with the announcement of the winner of our North East Open Call on Sunday. Jam-packed in-between, you’ll find exhibitions, talks, a mobile printing press, installations, a river cruise, workshops plus much more.
From Mima, the Python gallery, Platform A, to Middlesbrough Central Library, these are just a few of the locations that are showcasing as part of MAW18 over the four days.
Festival Launch Opening Event

Take the chance to experience interpretations of connectivity and identity, with multiple commissioned performances by Giles Bailey, Helen Davison and Moran Sanderovich. Explore what could very well be the biggest pop-up exhibition the Tees Valley has ever seen, with work by international as well as regional artists.
This event is free and open to everyone.
