We spoke to Kieran about the show and studying at The Northern School of Art:

Tell us about the exhibition, the meaning behind it and some of the works in the show?

Border Crossing is an exhibition with a selection artists focused on the Expanded Field of Painting. Looking at pushing the boundaries between both painting and sculpture, notions of ‘Objecthood’ and the rejection of High modernist painting.

The exhibition features a lot of local artists what was the selection process?

The exhibition features a lot of local artists. However, it wasn’t really something that I thought about during the selection process. I mainly just approached artists that I felt focused more on the physicality of a painting rather than illusionistic content. However, I think that the industrial background of the north east has had quite a large influence on the art work and has possibly influenced artists to work within the Expanded Field. Tony Charles is a great example of this.

Tell us what it was like working with local art space pineapple black?

Pineapple Black I found was a great place to work with. I’ve worked with them a few times during my degree and I found that they’ve been really helpful in regards to establishing my personal practice as a lot other art galleries wouldn’t let students exhibit there work. I found it great that they gave me the freedom to curate my own show!

How was the Northern School of Art special for you?

I found the Northern School of art a great place to study as it was a smaller institution which I felt made it easier to learn and lecturers where always willing to give you regular one to one feedback. I also found that the technicians where a great help with practical work and technical problems with my creative practice
