Conference: Taking Places: Identities formed in an Adverse Space. Paper: Autoethnographic Poems of Place

Author: Alyson Agar

Year: 2021

Abstract

Using autoethnography as a method, I presented a series of abstract, experimental photograms representing specific sites in Teesside of significant regional, personal, and symbolic importance. These works are currently influencing the direction of my practice-based PhD, situated at the intersection of photographic practice, fine art, urban studies, and heritage studies. Drawing on theories of the dérive (Debord, 1956) and the flâneuse (Elkin, 2016), I have created experimental photographic portraits of place, using the physical geography of each site – including soil and natural debris – rendered through experimental photographic image-making techniques.
