MA Design Practice  student Jenni Lloyd has received a highly commended award in this years Creative Conscience Awards in the community graphic design category with her project Queer Gardens.
Jennifer said, “the awards are a constant source of inspiration to me, seeing how other creatives have applied their skill set to produce a wide range of interesting projects so I am honoured to have achieved the commendation for this years CC awards.”

Jennifer was motivated to enter the awards through encouragement from her lecturers following submitting her project to her extended practice module, “it was really their encouragement that made me enter so I couldn’t be more thankful of the support that was available on the MA course. Having previously won Silver for the awards in 2024, I was  aware of the upcoming briefs and how I could then navigate a project that would both support my studies and could be entered under the CC briefs.”

Queer Gardens

Queer Gardens is a community driven project exploring the deep connection between the LGBTQ+ community and the natural world, it aims to encourage “individuals to claim space in gardens and celebrate their identities. By highlighting how diverse and fluid expressions of gender and sexuality have been mirrored by the natural world for centuries, the project invites the community to connect, plant and cultivate their own gardens that reflect their personal journeys, identities, and express their pride as we collectively celebrate the natural history of identity and embrace natures inclusive beauty.”

The project is presented “through a series of zines, each is focused on a specific flower that has deep historical ties to the queer community whether that has been through literature, poetry, activism, or properties of the flower. Exploring how each flower can be planted for both beginners and experienced gardeners, this project aims to collectively curate gardens which express pride in LGBTQ+ identities.”
