First year film students on our UAL Extended Diploma in Film & TV Production have just finished their live brief projects working directly with local businesses to create commercial films, this is the third year of the project which introduces students to the skills and requirements of working in their chosen field.
Lecturer Kat commented; “Each year we have worked with a range of local businesses. This time we worked with Juiced, Baker Street Kitchen, Hatchett Harrys and Level X. I always contact them over the summer to make arrangements and then the students contact them directly once the project starts. It helps build their confidence and commercial skill, finding out what it’s like to work in the real world.”
Baker Street Kitchen, a bar and cafe in Middlesbrough, said that working with the student’s on the project has ‘been a pleasure, we are happy to support students in their development, it’s how we have grown our team!” Baker Streets student film crew included, Ollie Morgans (Team Leader), Kayla Lincoln, Chloe Wilkinson, Josh Watts and Blake Sutherland.
Student Ollie enjoyed the group work, “Working on the live brief was quite enjoyable as being able to share work with a group took off a lot of pressure. It was also a great help in generating the final film that I was able to bounce off and receive ideas from a variety of sources such as members of my group or my business.”
Students working with Level X, Middlesbrough’s gaming arcade, were Owen Snell, Charlotte Henderson, Ethan Moon, Lilly Duce-Whittaker and Katherine Collins. Speaking of the project Team Leader Owen said, “Working on the live brief I had a lot of fun and found it very beneficial working with a client. I am very happy with the outcome that we got and I feel more informed for when we work with more clients in the future.”
Hatchett Harrys, Middlesbrough’s urban axe throwing facility worked with Eve Wilcox (Team Leader), Lucy Watson, Tishe Otedola and Izzy Wood.
Izzy said she “really enjoyed working on this project for the last couple of months because it’s been nice to apply all the skills that I’ve learnt since September to a bigger, more professional feeling project. I also enjoyed how much independence and freedom we had with the project- as it was up to us to contact our client, arrange shoot days etc…so it felt even more accomplishing to know that our final outcome is down to all of our hard work and planning.”
Student Tishe commented on working with her client and the positive experience she had; “I enjoyed the live brief project because it was my first time working with a client. It was nerve racking initially, but Hatchet Harry’s were very receptive to our ideas and did what they could to ensure my group and I were comfortable and had all the resources we needed for shooting. I’m really proud of what my group managed to create and I hope we get to do something similar to this in the near future.”

The final brief was for Middlesbrough based creative studio Juiced Studios, their video was created by student’s Gracey Bell (Team Leader), Jacob Trotter, Arran Gargett and Jorja Bell.
