The Northern School of Art’s National Saturday Club (NSC) students travelled to London in mid July to see their work on display in the NSC Summer Show in the Embankment Galleries of London’s prestigious Somerset House.

Students have had an incredible year developing their skills, discovering their talents and exploring their creativity covering a range of 2D and 3D activities across the varied programme. Club members developed skills in research, drawing and painting, and also explored ceramics, textiles and fashion, printmaking, model making, and digital processes. All members developed a sketchbook over the year, filled with their progress and inspiration.
Earlier this year the students took part in a Masterclass with Jason Bruges Studio where they created a Middlesbrough-inspired modular diorama, using a combination of digital and physical media.
Club members were encouraged to consider how to incorporate illumination into their pieces using programmable light strings. At the end of the Masterclass, the Club members’ brightly lit creations were brought together for a collective display, with the opportunity for them to present on their piece.
The National Saturday Club gives 13–16-year-olds the opportunity to study subjects they love for free. The year-long programme offers young people a transformational opportunity to learn new skills, discover their talents, and find out more about further education, higher education and rewarding careers.
The Northern School of Art’s National Saturday Club runs weekly from 10am-1pm during term time. Please note that students have to be nominated by their school teacher.
