Graduate Elizabeth Marley is the recipient for this years BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design Student of the Year Award 2023 . This award recognises a high degree of commitment and professionalism throughout the degree programme. The Costume staff team commented that this student has “worked hard every day to push their skills and find resolves, but always with a smile. No one deserves it more than this person.”

We caught up with Elizabeth, from Darlington to find out more about her next steps and studying costume at The Northern School of Art:

Why did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art?

I chose to study BA (hons) in Costume Interpretation With Design as I found my original plan of studying fashion would restrict my style as I enjoy making more theatrical garments. Moving from the local town of Darlington to Hartlepool to study at The Northern School Of Art I knew the university would be the best option for me. Only being 40 minutes away from my hometown and having the best advertised costume course it was no brainer.

What’s your favourite memory of your time at the School (academically as well as socially!)

The best memories I have from my university experience have been in the sewing studio, with only a few weeks left till deadlines we all share laughter, stress and tears making us feel one as a course as well as a year.

What are you doing next and what are your plans/ambitions for the future?

I have ambitions of becoming a breakdown costume artist as they specialise in the ageing and distressing of costumes. At the start of my career am I willing to get any experience I can get whether that be in TV, film or Theatre.

Any advice for future students applying for the same course as you?

My advice to any future students attending The Northern School Of Art is just focus on the moment and the now and enjoy it instead of worrying about what is to come.
