Eston Arts Centre is showing the first solo show of artist and school alumni David Pye, from Middlesbrough. This exhibition showcases his new series of oil paintings, drawings, objects and models created over lockdown. The show is inspired by a local war time story about a bomber in World War II that was shot down by spitfires on Eston Hills, an incident which was witnessed by the artist’s father.
Using his father’s memories, David’s show looks at this local historic moment, the history, wildlife and landscape of the Eston Hills, the mysterious Barnaby Village (known locally as Ghost Town) as well as exploring the constructs of memory, conflict, remembrance and reflects on his artistic career over the last 20 years.
David studied at The Northern School of Art (then CCAD) forty years ago, inspired by his education and former teacher and staff member Joe Cole who was a specialist in painting war time scenes.
Eston Arts Centre commented:
“It’s great to see him achieving his ambition of having an exhibition of his paintings many years later. It’s never too late to make art and to make a career as an artist. And we hope this inspires other ex students to keep making art, and if they have stopped to get back into it. Making art is rewarding, no matter what age you are.”
Speaking of the exhibition, the artist commented, “I hope the exhibition will get people talking. It’s so important to talk to family members and friends of different ages about the past and to share conversations about their memories. Everyone has their story to share.”
