Fine Art lecturer Tony Charles is showcasing ‘Stroke’ a solo exhibition at The Auxilary in Middlesbrough, with the preview night opening tomorrow, the exhibition officially runs until the 8th Feb. Stroke is an exhibition that sees Tony Charles’ continuation of his investigation into the relationship between painting, sculpture, industry and art and comprises two main elements.

Stroke by Tony Charles
Stroke is an exhibition that sees Tony Charles’ continuation of his investigation into the relationship between painting, sculpture, industry and art and comprises two main elements.
Firstly, a selection of his Unpaintings, the works that he has become known for, are presented with the inclusion of his most recent creations. These imposing metallic pieces are both paintings and presentations of an industrial process.
The second element presents the eponymous ‘Stroke’: a sculptural steel installation where the perception of steel as robust, strong and rigid is countered by the actual appearance of its gestural elegance and fluidity, as it is placed with an allusion made to painting. A conceptual connection between art and industry is also set up through an agreed situation that the steel, which is borrowed from a steel stockist, remains for sale to the stockists customers. If sold during the exhibition the customer will unwittingly be buying a piece of artwork. Once again, Charles switches references within artistic disciplines to question their parameters whilst finding ways to merge industry with art
