BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design graduate and designer Luke Nicholas spoke to us about his work with MTB Specific clothing brand Uncrafted. Based in Markse, Uncrafted was established in 2019 and uses techniques such as screen printing to make their garments. The brand specialises in jerseys and riding pants and it’s ethos is “about no one being perfect and expressing my love for design”

During university Luke gained support for designing for this market from course leader Jayne Hemmins “my tutor Jayne Hemings was an amazing teacher for me, as she cared so much and seen the potential in the market I was interested in. She looked after me well and taught me different print techniques which peaked the interest in this particular creative technique.”

Luke started his creative journey with us in Middlesbrough at college level and then on to Hartlepool were he studied BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design “The northern school of art was special to me because it made me feel welcome and it was a place that I felt my most comfortable in.”

Speaking of university and advice for young creatives “I advise as a creative myself that it’s important to use university as not just time to complete deadlines but to really refine your given skill , also use the resources to get the best preparation for the big world … speak to people and learn , I would also suggest finding a gap in the market , because if you are going into a commercial career it’s important to be different … my final bit of advice is work hard , enjoy what your doing and just keep pushing through even when things get hard.”

Alongside Uncrafted Luke is working on a number of projects, “I am also screen printing for other mtb brands and general organisations such as the bikes college and running some live printing events with the council…. along with designing jerseys for other companies and bike shops.”
